If I were to write a modern-day adaptation of Heart of Darkness it would be about the flaws of our economic system today. The main message of the story would be that even though we say capitalism gives opportunities to all many people in our country tend to remain in the class that they were born to. The story would follow an investigator posed as a young businessman. He objective is to steadily climb the corporate ladder to eventually get closer to a corrupt CEO of a corporation. He must collect evidence on him to uncover his corruption and take down his reign. Through the course of the story the main character encounters many drones who he sees as brainwashed. While encountering the great riches the CEO has amassed, the main character also sees the great poverty caused by the company. He stumbles across a neighborhood brought into poverty due to the selfish acts of the CEO. These people can be seen as the savages in this story. The were seen as lazy in the eyes of the corporate world but they simply could not find jobs as the CEO had closed a factory they had all worked at in a multibillion dollar deal he had made. The CEO is a very wise man and in that sense the investigator has an odd respect for him. However, in the end he exposes the CEO for all of his corruption and wrongdoing.
This synopsis really is very interesting, and you answered the prompt very succinctly. It reminds me of Fast and Furious for some reason though. I guess that could be another adaptation of Heart of Darkness too. Other than that, it was a good blog, and I really liked your movie idea.
ReplyDeleteThis idea immediately captivated me. I like the idea of the corporate world being corrupt, because initially it is. the business world is the idea to take people's money for things they need. In my eye's that is evil. Hope this makes the big screen its an original take on the Heart of Darkness.
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely a very apropos adaptation for today's society and the current economic crisis. I liked how when I was reading your synopsis I could clearly see who out of Heart of Darkness your characters represented. Similarly to Heart of Darkness, your main character, like Marlow, is on a journey to seek truth. Both find the source of corruption, Kurtz and the CEO, yet also find a certain respect for them. The economic crisis is at the heart of the United States, just as the corruption in Heart of Darkness was at the heart of the congo. This was a great idea for an adaptation.
ReplyDeleteI think, like Stephanie, that this adaptation would be very appropriate to modern day. You put the story into a business context very well and seem well informed yourself. A story about corporations would be a tough sell for me, but you made it interesting. I would hate to think of the businessy research that you'd have to do to create the story though.
ReplyDeleteMore to the point though, you seemed to make the adaptation idea parallel the original very well.
