Just Keep Swimming

Journeys and quests can be defined as travelling from one place to another. These voyages take up a significant amount of time and are filled with obstacles and lessons to be learned. One Disney movie that features the qualities of a quest or journey is Finding Nemo. In this movie, Nemo does not listen to his dad, Marlin, when he tells him not to go "touch the butt" which is actually a fishing boat. As Nemo swims over and disobeys his father he is caught in a fishing net beginning the journey of Marlin and Dory finding Nemo.
Throughout this journey, both Nemo and Marlin learn important information about each other that they did not see before. Nemo is stuck in a dentist's fish tank with other various fish who help him devise a plan to escape and go back to the ocean. Nemo realizes that even though his father was over protective he was just trying to keep his son safe. As Marlin searches through the ocean with Dory, he faces sharks and jellyfish that make their journey harder than planned. Marlin discovers that some times parents just have to learn to let go and give their children some freedom so that they can grow.
Finding Nemo is just one example of a story about a quest out of many. These types of stories are so popular because everybody goes through some sort of journey throughout their own life. Facing fears and overcoming obstacles to get to your destination, whether it being a physical or mental one, occurs every day. Quests and journeys are a learning experience that teach people about themselves and the other people surrounding them. Just like Dory's annoying song that she sings to Marlin, in order to get to our final destination we must "just keep swimming."

  1. While I think that you did a good job with your blog, I don't feel like you answered most of the prompt. You mostly tanked about Finding Nemo, and while I like this story, I feel as if you ignored the rest of the prompt. The question of what makes quests so common a story is gone unanswered, and it makes me think that the blog isn't quite finished.

  2. Finding Nemo is one of my favorite movies. I agree that a quest is a journey from one destination from to another but I believe the idea that the people along the way make the journey the actual quest. I think to Nemo it is more of a quest because he keeps trying to overcome the problems and insecurities he has while in the fish tank

  3. Finding Nemo is definitely a quintessential story revolved around the main character's journey. However, I feel like you could have elaborated on certain aspects of the prompt rather than summarizing the basic plot line. For example, instead of touching on merely his physical journey, you could have gone into the deeper aspects of his journey.

  4. Finding Nemo is most certainly one of the best examples of a quest or journey story. I agree that both Nemo and Marlin had important lessons to learn throughout the story. I think that this is the reason why the idea of a journey story popular. Just as you stated, each one of us is faced will have to face a journey one day or another. In fact I would venture to say that we are all on one of the most important journeys of our lives here in college as we attempt to try and find ourselves and discover who it is that we were created to be. A;though this quest may seem difficult at times, we realize from all the journey stories that we encounter and read, that there are many lessons to be learned and so much to be gained after the journey is all said and done. That is why, in my opinion these stories are so important and popular, because they show us that even while we are struggling in our own personal quests, there is still hope for a lesson learned.

  5. Finding Nemo is a good example of a story. It is a journey which in the end brings a family back together with an even better relationship than they had before. The father-son aspect is key and the humans are viewed as the antagonist. This might be contextualizing how we are taking over the world and ruining little lives to better our own. Good job on explaining this quest because it is really cute, while sending out a subliminal message.

  6. I really enjoyed your choice of topic for the blog this week. This is a great story of family and belonging. You did a good job of tying in the Disney aspects of it with the reality of the love of a father. This journey was, to me, the true meaning of love.
